Runes
Runes come from the Nordic area where the ancient Vikings once lived, worked, and fought. Though they were relatively savage in their outings, the Vikings were people in touch with Earth and the many forces that coexisted with them. They have a whole lore that includes many popular god figures such as Thor, the son of Odin. Thor carried a mighty hammer and many of us know him from comic books. The father of Thor, Odin, was the creator of the Runes and is the most important holy figure of the Viking people. Odin hung upside down from a tree limb for a chance of higher knowledge and right before he came down from the tree limb, he was bestowed with the new system called the Runes. These symbols were used for writing and magic by the high priests. There are 24 Runes.
This first aett is ruled by Freyja, the Norse god of fertility. The eight runes in this aett describe creation and basic facets of life.
Fehu . Uruz . Thurisaz .Ansuz . Raido . Kaunaz . Gebo . Wunjo
This second aett is named after Hagalaz, the ninth rune, which describes hail and destructive winter weather. The eight runes in this aett describe forces that are beyond the control of humans. Six of them are non-invertable, suggesting the sheer power contained in the aett.
Hagalaz . Nauthiz . Isa . Jera . Eihwaz . Perth . Algiz . Sowela
The third aett is named after Tyr, who is believed to have been a god of justice or war. He links with Teiwaz, the seventeenth rune. The eight runes in this aett describe transformation and the human condition.
Teiwaz . Berkana . Ehwaz . Mannaz . Laguz . Inguz . Othila . Dagaz
Casting Runes
The manner in which you cast your runes is entirely up to you. You can turn it into a ceremony during which you play suitable music and light candles, nothing your question and the runes answer in a book which you can refer to later. Or you may prefer to consult the runes without using any special ritual at all, simply delving into the pouch or box and taking out a rune when you need an instant answer to a question. What is important however, is that you take the runes seriously. They will not respond in the way you wish if you treat them as light-hearted parlour game.
The two main methods of casting runes are to place them all face down on a flat surface and select them individually, or take one or more runes out of their container. If you choose the latter method you will soon notice how you are apparently drawn to the rune that best answers your question or reveals your state of mind.
